TotalEnergies and MOL Group successfully refueled Singapore's first ship using biofuel

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and TotalEnergies Marine Fuels have successfully refueled a ship in Singapore using biofuels for the first time, the shipping company said Wednesday.


The ship, a car and truck carrier named Heroic Ace, was refueled with biofuel supplied by TotalEnergies through a ship-to-ship transfer on June 11, according to a statement from MOL.


Very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) and second-generation, waste-based, ISCC-certified used cooking oil methyl ester constituted the biofuel blend used in the research, according to MOL (UCOME). ISCC is a certification program for renewables and sustainable bio-based feedstocks.


The company predicts that the use of biofuel will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 17 percent compared to conventional fuel oil.


Koichi Hirata, general manager of MOL's Car Carrier Division, said that the division has been experimenting with the usage of biofuel for more than a year during European short-haul navigation. According to Hirata, MOL is boosting its use of biofuels on longer trips.


Biofuel was used for the trip to Jebel Ali, United Arab Emirates.


As maritime decarbonisation gathers speed and bunkering demand for alternative fuels grows, biofuel bunkering trials have increased in the shipping industry in 2018.
